4 cylinders have good engines but troublesome Ford automatic transmissions (after 1994); V6 has a not so durable engine with good transmission( all years). In fact, it seems that the only good years were 1990-1994. Earlier years had headgasket issues and later years had tranny issues or not so great motors. Still even the best should reach 200K miles without issues. Any other choices? A 4 cylinder with 5 speed manual should be reliable. I know more than a handful of people who have over 200K trouble-free miles on manual trannied 4 cylinders.

If you maintain a solid maitenance program all around and drive the car with car, you can expect to drive it far past 10 years. As long as a vehicle is maintained it will keep going and going. Drive it like your at Indy and your gonna have issues earlier rather than later. Somwhere around 150-200K you can start to expect to replace parts, such as the starter, alternator, and such...however if you can do it yourself or have a friend who will do it for you, you can get even more miles out of a car. Parts usually are not the killer with cars, it is the labor fees that dealers charge...as a 10 minute install of a new probe costs you an hour of labor even if the repair doesn't really take that long.

The ones from the late 1990's should still be OK if they were properly serviced all along. Before 1996 - forget it.

4 cyl car transmission is a ford unit and does not last. 6 cyl car is pretty nice but not the longest lasting engine but the japan transmission lasts longer.
