being an inept unsuitable undesirable male/mate. being the scorn of females their entire life, being born unnatractive, incapable, weak, being unsuccessful, not happy with their own lives. Being impotent or having a small penis not able to please a woman, envy, insecurity and desire for control when they have none but basically boils down to insecurity fear and control. They are somehow defective in some way and not a suitable mate most likely. Also environment can contribute to it. Ignorance and growing up with very sad parental figures, also mommy issues thrown into the mix. For example: a mother that somehow disapointed him in some way.

'They resent the power women have, it makes them feel less than a man' and threatened about thier own masculinity, it makes them feel weak so in order gain some of that control back they resort to such ignorance actually thinking it might make a difference, maybe not in the real world but at least for themselves to feel better with what theyre uncomfortable with'

It boils down to they are weak in some area of their own life and a good scapegoat is women or if women have somehow mistreated them they bare a grudge against all based on assumptions and distrust. Also preconceived notions on roles in society.

All about power.

I have to point out that misogyny has been around a few centuries longer than feminism, but that does not negate Mike T's answer. Some of today's men may see feminism as the cause of misogyny, but I would like to dig deeper and and learn why even ancient laws (Roman Empire & Biblical accounts, for example) are anti-female. I know Aristotle was a misogynist and as for Plato.... draw you own conclusions, folks.

Girly made some good points about men defining themselves in terms of women, and I don't completely discount the womb-envy theory, either. I think perhaps the two are somehow related.

The intimate nature of sexual relationships probably contributes to the development of misogyny when a man has a negative experience in a relationship. If he has shared his innermost feelings and then been burned, the pain he feels is converted to hate. Then, if his social network affirms him, the hate grows.

That's just my opinion. I'm learning a lot reading other answers. Great question.

Luck of the draw: A guy who has the misfortune to encounter a string of detestable women might reasonably generalize that 'women are detestable,' don't you think?

Trauma: A guy with female relatives who abuse him horribly, and who has no other experience of women can hardly avoid thinking ill of women.

Peer Pressure: When a boy is separated from the female population and indoctrinated by a misogynistic male peer group, he's likely to adopt misogyny as the proper view.

Factual Recognition: If all women are worthy of hate, only a fool wouldn't hate women.

Astrological Forces: The stars inform the soul. If a man hates women, look at the time and place of his birth for the cause.

And so on. There is no shortage of theories here.

What causes misogyny? I don't know. It exists, but I reject the frequent accusation that it's a pervasive thing. I don't hate women--how do you account for that?

I guess seeing issues between your mom and dad and just issues with your mom but I think some men get hurt or used or kicked and ground-in so many times this can cause it also. A lot of little boys are never taught respect for the female gender and then it doesn't take a lot to screw the lid on tight. Some little boys are never around a female that deserves respect also.

Blaming over 0.5 the human race for the strikes of a few persons is idiotic. No, that some, uh, biatch became into biatch-like isn't MY fault. i don't administration the habit of another woman on the earth. sometime too stupid to attain that all and sundry women at the instant are not the comparable woman is going to make up lies and believe them, no remember how they are dealt with. Is each male to blame for the rapes devoted by potential of the very few? women do not reason misogyny; misogynists do.

Each person has their own personal reason. Yet it all boils down to one thing and one thing only. Thinking, belief and attitude. A man who thinks women are bad is going to believe they are bad and his attitude can only speak of what he thinks and believes. There is no ifs ands and buts about it.
All they need is just a catalyst; many have found a very likely and true catalyst in feminism.

If a boy has an unloving mother, he will be unloving. Since all he knows is unloving, he will seek relationships with unsuitable women and further feed his unloving behavours and attitude. The opposite could be true for women who hate men!

I think that the cause of misogyny in today's society is religion. Religion is the most dominant tool in today's society and it promotes and emphazises the double standards of God and society against women. The most popular religions do this day are: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

In Genesis 2:15-18 talks about the order in which God created men and Women, and their "roles". Adam was created to manage and keep the garden of Eden.

Adam lived in the garden but God thought he needed more, so God created animals and fowls, but Adam wasn't satisfied- so God created Eve.

Eve wasn't created the same way Adam was, but from Adam's rib. Eve's role wasn't to manage the garden of Eve with Adam but to help (serve/assist) Adam.

All these passages in Genesis could appear to be subtle to some, but they very well distinguish the roles of men and women based on how they came about.

In the past the first born male had more rights over the property of its father than the second born and so forth.

So the fact that God was so catering to Adam's needs is intriguing, as well as the fact that God creation of animals and fowls before creating Eve. According to Genesis, the reason God created Eve was because Adam wasn't still felt lonely after the animals were created, so this is how God got it right after producing a woman from Adam's ribs. Therefore, God was not able to anticipate Adam's desires first when he created the animals and fowls thinking that they would be enough, but not after he saw Adam's dissatisfaction or lonliness God was able to create Eve.
Therefore, this implies that God created Eve as to please Adam. Hence, Adam and Eve weren't created "equally" or with the same purpose.

Also, as you know God warned Adam about the tree of Good and Evil. Who did the snake (the wisest animals of all) approached? She approached Eve. Women are believed to be weak and gullible creatures due to their ability to show emotions. It was Eve who listened to the snake, and then "persuaded" Adam to go against God's orders.

Genesis 3:16 God told Eve that Adam was to rule over her.
Today, most religions follow this. Religious people are men and women. We could be both conscious people but yet we are both susceptible to subleties in what is being passed from our parents and their parents, unless we become aware.

Some of you may say that this is no longer taught in today's religions but if this were true, then how come the are no priestess in the Catholic church? Why do men in Islam are not required to cover their hair but women are? Also, by continuing to read something that is so against our values of today, why do we still have it as part of the religion. Like men having sex with their daughters, and producing offsprings. Or fathers putting their daughters outside so they are raped while the boys are safe inside the house. All of this is in the old testament for you to read.

Men are into power. Their sexual attraction to women gives women a great power over men. They often think of sex with conquering a woman and the woman being the conquered. Taking advantage of women sexually while not respecting them then becomes a way to reclaim that power in their mind.

People start hating large groups of people (men, women, whites, blacks, conservatives, liberals, etc.) when one of them has made a deep negative impact on them. They decide not to risk that kind of hurt again by putting up a wall between themselves and every other member of that group.
