seems to me it begain with a 'P' for positive pressure.

Its a manometer or U gauge as it is commonly called. We use them to test to see if the gas valve is letting by, this is done for one minute, and the test for as it called tightness for two minutes. This tests for leaks.
The gauge is also use to measure the pressure of the gas going to the burner, known as burner pressure.

The best thing to use is soapy water. Swab it down and look

The only thing I have ever heard of is a pressure guage.

I have always seen monometers used for checking gas services.
