I think that the supposed effectiveness of the 'law of attraction' can be easily explained by two very well-known psychological principles: the 'Pygmalion effect' and 'expectation.

In Greek mythology, Pygmalion was a sculptor who loved a statue so much that a goddess brought it to life for him. So the fact that he loved it with such intensity made it something that could be loved.

People do this kind of thing all the time. For example, if you think someone is going to act in a way you don't like, it would be normal to be upset with them. But if someone thinks that your upset with them for no reason, they'll probably be more inclined to not accommodate you and act in ways you don't like. Or vice versa, if you're really nice to someone because you think they like you, they're more likely to like you even if they didn't in the first place.

And so it might well be with the 'law of attraction'. If someone decides that everyone is going to be nice to them today, they have every reason to be nice back. Only they'll be nice back FIRST (if that makes any sense). So really it would be easier to strip away the mumbo-jumbo and just be nice, neh?

The other angle is expectation. If you're expecting something to happen, your mind makes you more prone to see it - it becomes hypersensitive to things that might qualify as whatever you're looking for. So if you are expecting to see snakes all over the place, it is actually quite likely that your brain will start identifying any number of things as snakes based on more and more superficial resemblances. This isn't likely to be a full-blown delusion or hallucination... instead you'll see something out of the corner of your eye, your brain will say, 'SNAKE!', and when you go to look, you'll just see wavy power cord or hose and wonder where the snake went.

So again with the law of attraction, even if you behave in no way differently, by focusing entirely on good things you're going to SEE a lot more of them. And sometimes you will even interpret things that are not necessarily good in a good light. You will not be permitted to consider both sides - by dwelling on the possibility the bad things MIGHT happen, the law says you'll MAKE them happen.

This is what I consider the suspect part of the whole shebang. If you're not allowed to think fairly about it, then doesn't that suggest that they whole thing is unfair? That's my take anyway, for what it's worth.

Peace.

The Law of Attraction is similar to the psychological concept of magical thinking. Although I believe in the power of the mind to heal an individual, the law of attraction, when taken to its logical conclusion, would mean that a woman attracts a rapist into her life or a child wants to be sexually molested or the young man wants to be shot during a hold up.

The problem with the law of attraction is that it gives lip service to all of the good things we can create in our lives but then doesn't fully address the really horrible things that can happen.

Like atttracts like. People are like magnets, whatever you focus on, you get, good and bad. The universe is ready to give you what you want, might as well focus on the good stuff. Case in point, my house was on the market for over a year and a half. I kept thinking, " why wont that house sell". Then one day I looked in the mirror and changed my focus to, " the house is sold" and I really believed in it. This is weird, two days later I had a buyer. True story. So, yes. I'm a believer. Small side note, have been believing in parking places close to the door of the place I want to go, so far every time since I changed my focus a place opens up for me.

In my case, it totally work. I started without being aware of the "law of attraction" when I went to the bookstore and read a book on magics. I then started learning and applying the concept of thinking and feeling things like they where facts, and they were becoming reality as I was feeling them. With that power, I was able to control objects, other peoples and also learned to speak English in less then a week.

Being from a very religious family, this process was totally against their principle, as they were seeing it like dealing with the devil, so I ditched it and stopped using it.

Now, years later, I got a friend passing me on the movie "The secret", which basically teach you the possibilities, but the process to become able to really control objects, people and your own destiny is explained in a way that lots of people will not get it right.

You need to feel the things to the point of truly believing they are as you feel and that is not automatic and not easy at first. Truly, it work with small things and big things. Seeing this movie helped me remember a whole lot of things that passed when I was younger, and I played with it since I saw it, now believing it has nothing to do with the devil, everything to do with my mind. A coworkers dog got hit by a car yesterday, I thought about the dog and felt him alive and happy, told the coworker it would be in perfect shape when she pick the dog from the veterinarian , which happen. This morning, I needed a towel that was drying outside... touched it and it was all wet... then backed out, started to focus it was dry, and less then 30 seconds later, it was totally dry... I believe in all the task about asking, be grateful and all that, but the harder concept to get is to feel it, and make yourself believe it is already present or the way you felt it... When you learn that, all doors are open.

But it is not easy to start. I remember when I was young imploring for hours for what I wanted, but was taking hours for me to realize that it was happening. The very moment you get a slight doubt it won´t work, you have to start from scratch, witch is why sceptics will all tell you this is B.S. !
