well im 21 weeks pregnant, and I work as a receptionist. My boss smokes in his office, and Im about 20 ft away and I can smell it. I usually open the front door and light a candle, it helps but I can still smell it and it bugs the sh*t outa me!! thing is, that a smoking ban was passed and u cant even smoke in a bar where i live, so I know its illegal and its a big fine if he gets caught. I cant exactly tell him to quit smoking because hes my boss. But then people I work with always bug me about having the door open because its 90 out and the air is on...well I cant stand the smoke !!

what should I do?!

I feel ya, I really do. My boss (also happens to be my father in law) smokes in the office. He's been asked nicely (which only made him close his door, yeah THAT helped, not), and then was firmly told that under no uncertain terms was he to smoke in the office again. Truth be told, that lasted all of 2 months. He's smoking in the office again. He's about to be told something once again. If you can't bring yourself to be firm with your boss your only other option is to report him. Best of luck.

**EDIT TO ADD** um, yes she can tell him to quit smoking in his office. She just said a law has been passed banning smoking indoors. She has the law on her side. By the way, those little room purifiers won't do her much good. They let smoke through. Even the top of the line, whole house/office air purifiers will let SOME particals through. Those little ionic breeze things don't do squat. It will travel through the a/c duct work and make it to her area. Can you tell we're an a/c business? Lol

WHOA...that is so rude! I am a smoker and I never smoke around pregnant people or anyone who doesn't smoke for that matter unless they say they are fine with it! :You have to do something about it...can you try talking to him? From the sound of it that might not work and you may have to take it a step further and involve someone. BUT then you might be risking you job. The health of your unborn baby is what is the most important though. Good luck with this!

In Ohio, we had a smoking ban passed and there is a number that you can call to report people smoking where they aren't supposed to...if you have a ban then there should be a number you can call. Or just tell him that you are pregnant and second hand smoke is really bad for the baby and if he could please do it somewhere else. It's not fair that you should have to put up with that and put your baby at risk just cause some jerkoff likes to light up.

Yikes!!

Hmm,...this is a sticky situation for sure. I know it's very nerve-wracking to confront your boss, and who would want to?! I think you're doing the right thing by opening the door...and trying to freshen up the air around you. I do think, however, that instead of confronting your boss...let the people you work with know exactly why you need the door open. If they can't understand that, then that's THEIR problem. You do what's best for YOU!

What about bringing in a desk fan for yourself?

Sounds easier said than done, but....is it possible to search out a new job?

Good luck to you....!!!

suggest him to use an air purifier in his office and a smokeless ash tray (it sucks the smoke in with a fan...it's neat). You cannot tell him to quit of course or even stop smoking in his own office, but if it were that serious then call the police station anonomously and make a complaint. Is it possible for you to move seats further away? If not then i don't know much on what to tell you.

there is a video out there that shows the effects of smoking while pregnant (even if the mother isn't smoking) if you can find it show it to your co-workers. It may make them think twice about smoking around you.

I suggest you anonymously turn his smoking butt in!
Or tell your co-workers to deal with it, cause you are pregnant and can't deal with the smoke.

I say report him, if he fires you for it, it's retaliatory, which you can file a lawsuit over and win big money to take care of your family.

the way i see it you have two choices

1- you can ask him to not smoke cause it bothers you
2- you can report him

either way you win!!
