There's nothing wrong with being a nerd. Some of the most successful people are nerds. Look at Bill Gates.

First of all, get them to love reading. Read to them as much as possible, take them to the public library all of the time, let them pick out their own books. Second of all, limit TV time. A few shows a day, especially educational shows like on Noggin, should be good enough.
And lastly, what is the problem with being a "nerd"? Honestly, if you're more worried about what kids will think of them at school, and not enough about how much they value learning, that's kind of sad.
The trick is to find the balance between their social lives, and getting to spend lots of time with their friends, and then getting to stay at home, happily reading.

Hey, everyone wants to be a nerd these days! Besides, don't be too strict or controlling with kids, because they're going to turn out how they want to in the end, either way.

Make them do their school work but make sure they are always in fashion. They have all the phones and cool stuff so they are smart and in at the same time.

Just do what you need to to make sure they have common sense and reasoning skills. The rest will come natural.
