to rebuild a Transmission is a very very large and brain binding job. I cant even do it and trust me that don't happen all the time when it comes to rebuilding things. I wouldn't touch it with a 50 foot pole cause if one little thing is off a bit everything is shot. I would look around at the junk yards for a transmission you will be able to get it cheap and plus it could last long enough to save for a person to do the rebuilding for you. trust me its a tough job. Let someone who knows how to do it look at it. If you want to learn how to do it get some books get ahold of a small transmission and see if you really feel you could go to the bigger ones. Well here is a link of your transmission broke apart and you will see that its harder then you think it is. This is not for your Ford transmission but its a great view of what you will be dealing with. I cant for some reason find the site my husband looks at for his transmission diagram but this is what I can find for now if I was to look at bit longer I can find it for you. Or I can wait for him to get home from work to see where he goes for his diagrams of the trany.

You don't. Leave it up to the professionals.
Lets just say this way : you have several rods going into the tranny, and on each rod, there are about 100 - 150 little gears. Disassembling one of these, you would get several hundred gears. If you can categorize, and document all the gears and assembling sequence then you can rebuild it. Most people don't have this type of organization skill so you are better off buying a used transmission than rebuilding on your own.
Also it takes about 5 hours of labor to take it out of the car. Most mechanics would take the transmission out for you, but they will not touch the internal gears.

Unless you are experienced in rebuilding automatic transmissions do yourself a favor and buy a reman unit with a warranty. The A4LD transmission used in the Explorer, Ranger and Aerostar is kind off a temper-mental beast. The transmission techs in my shop run when they see one coming, we finally started do R&R only on these vehicle transmissions because of the problems we encountered with them.

That depends on your mechanical skill and if you have the proper tools available. Yes it can be done but you should have more than basic mechanical skills.
