Ok, here are all the details i can imagine would be relevant.

I have the Linksys WRT54GS wireless router set up with the CAT5 network cable going to the "internet" port from my DSL modem. I have another length of CAT5 going from the "1" port to the ethernet port on my desktop computer. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate. I can get into my router configuration and set up my wireless network. When I do this, my laptop sees the network, gets an IP address and connects to the wireless network but I have no internet connectivity for either my desktop or my laptop. I know they are on the same network because I can use the remote desktop feature on my laptop to log in to my desktop (the whole reason i started this project). Unfortunately it isnt doing me any good because I cant connect to the internet. When run the cable directly from the modem to the ethernet port on the desktop (eliminating the router completely) it works just fine, evidenced by the fact i'm able to post this. Help!

Make sure the cable between the modem and the router is in the WAN port. Then get inside the router and make sure the WAN is enabled. When all else fails, power cycle everything at once.

I do not have time to read your long whatever.
10 to 1 if you change the channel it will solve your problem.
You most likely have a signal from a neighbour , which is also set on channel 6 wafting in . You will have a strong signal from your router but get no internet.

Go into the control panel-

http://192.168.1.1
defaults are user admin
password : admin or blank

change the channel - 1 and 11 are first choices

make sure the router is high and uncluttered

you might want to change the ssid ( network name) even if it is only to add a digit

I knew of one fellow - very security cautious
would not add encryption - wireless printer setup and fear of daughter
had 2 wireless laptops and the printer + daughters hard wired computer

2 or 3 neighbours all had linksys routers at default settings
i think 15 devices in all on his network map
when i turned on encryption - the wireless internet would not work - confusion with the ssid of the other default routers
added 1 digit to the ssid
one neighbour even had a windows 95 wireless card installed

very usefull program

Summary - change the channel of the wireless router to 1 or 11

Try these steps in this order; you may not need to do all of them.

When you change from pc wired to modem to router wired to modem, you must reboot the modem.

You may need a cross cable between modem and router (and maybe a straight cable is ok for the pc if it has auto sensing port). Check that out.

Finally, make sure you have the router WAN config set for a dynamic ip from your carrier. Save your router config settings, and reboot.

In your routers web interface when you click on status, what do you see? If you see an IP address you should be online, if not then you may need to reset everything by powering down, then powering up first the modem, then the router once the modem has synced, then the computers.

have you copied the WEP/WPA key on to the network card ? this is the most common reason for not connecting to the internet.
if you dint do it, it will be much easier for you to remove the current configuration and start all over again.
go to wireless nw properties and find your nw and remove it.
then switch of the computer.
reset the router.
then when the lights are steady on the router, turn on your pc/desktop.
now it ll start all over to recognise the router and go to the router page to configure settings.
on wireless settings, it ll ask for a WEP key for you to enter. if you enter a name or anything it ll show you a long aplphanumeric key.
you need to copy those string of characters and save it.
after everything is done when you try to connect to the internet it ll ask you for the key.
copy the entire key and confirm it.
it ll take a while to connect.
this should probably solve the issue.
good luck.

I had to assign each computer its own IP address rather than having it obtain an address automatically. So starting at 192.168.1.2 I just incremented by one and gave each computer its own address. Then it worked fine. I gave the DNS server as the routers IP address rather than obtaining a DNS address automatically, also.

what's the brand of your DSL modem? you might want to change your modem to be in Bridged Ethernet mode, and then change your router so that it has pppoe. what's your ISP?

Linksys has a tool to help your connect and fix network problems:

Sit back and watch it work!
