What good does it do submiting to Yahoo, Google etc do you for anyway? What's it's purpose? How do you get rid of errors in the map? Or is there a way online to do that too?

It's all very confusing but trust me this is the easiest way.
Use this free service:
http://www.xml-sitemaps.com/
You just type in your URL and it will produce all the different format sitemaps for you.
It will also check your website for any broken links. The instructions are quite clear.
Google prefers XML format for their sitemap, so just copy the xml code and paste it into your website's 'public_html' folder at your webhost.
You will need FTP or Control Panel to do that.
You can also paste in all the other formats (ROR and plain text) if you want to to cover all bases with other search engines.
Then go into your Google webmaster tools and notify them that you have added an XML sitemap and give them the address.
