It can be a matter of religious views or of plain and simple ignorance. The fact is that no matter what, if people don't understand homosexuality, they will always assume that a gay person chooses it.

It is a lot of things. I happen to be a deeply religious Christian and straight, and I think homosexuality is genetic. So I think it is something else. Fear. Ignorance. Prejudice like any other prejudice. Homosexuals are different than straight people in some ways, and some people use differences to separate themselves and build themselves up. Sometimes religion plays a role, but usually the religion is just being manipulated because of the fear and ignorance. The fear and ignorance are the real problem.

In some cases, it is because of their religious views. In other cases, the straight person may not know an "out" gay person well enough to ask about their experience. (They likely indeed know a gay person but may not be aware of it.) I would suggest folks with this point of view haven't done enough research into the topic.
Why would any person CHOOSE to be marginalized, targeted for attack, unable to legally marry, etc. if a simple choice was all it took to NOT experience these things?
I challenge the same heterosexual people whether they could "choose" to be gay. Very likely no. But they're expecting gay people to do something they themselves could not conceive of doing - switch their sexual orientation on demand.

At some point you have to drop your trousers. You could as easily walk away. Depends on the choice you make.
There is no "gay gene", there's no way to tell if a child is likely to be gay by lineage. A person who is gay is more likely to come from a divorced home raised by the mother than to have a gay person in the family tree.
Using the same arguments that you were born gay, I could use for smokers. Who would take up smoking if it wasn't genetic? Smokers should have the same rights as anyone else.

i am straight and i don't believe it's a choice. but i wouldn't really know because i'm not gay and that's where people get messed up. straight people have absolutely no way of knowing what goes on in a gay person's life/head. people who say this are probably homo phobic and use it as an excuse because they need a REASON why people are gay. it's mostly ignorance. i don't think it's religious because i'm a christian and i believe everyone has the right to be whatever they want to be. this world is getting sickening because everyone has to pick on people who aren't like them. get over it world! we are all human, we all breathe the same air, we all have a heart, arms, eyes. who cares what people prefer in their own lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

until there is something resembling scientific evidence that it is genetic or in some way part of who you are and they way you are born, I will continue to believe that it is a choice.
Every behavior of any kind is a choice, I just made the choice to eat at McDonalds, it was a choice to get in my car and drive there, Just like having a relationship with someone is a choice whether its homo- or hetero -sexual its a choice we make just like anything else we do.

Because it ( really ) is a choice , nobody is '' born '' gay , they chose to be that way , besides the scientists have searched and searched and searched and they have not found a '' gay gene '' , not only that but ( no offense to anyone ) it's a very sick and abnormal behavior , I'm not saying that gay people are sick , it's the behavior , for example : when you're scolding a child , you're not scolding the child itself but it's ways , attitude , doings in other words the behavior , and you do that not because you want to hurt the child , but because you want to help it

It's that 'ol square-peg, round-hole thing.
You can determine your orientation by simply pulling up your dress or pulling down your pants -it's all right there in front of you.
It only became a mystery over about the last 25 years.
Then, when word definitions started changing, well, it was all out the window!

the ones who don't think: religious views
the ones who actually think about it a little: self-hating bisexual in serious denial who can't let go of religious views
who else but a bisexual could think it's a choice? straight people who think about it know they could never CHOOSE to be with someone of the same sex
