I prefer honesty -- even if it is negative.
I can lie to you and be positive and upbeat if that is what you prefer. I follow the belief that never ask a question and then complain about an answer given.
If I don't want a negative response then don't ask a question in a way that allows for a negative reply. Not asking a question can avoid the whole nasty mess as well.
Although, I would add that we live in a culture that promotes 'support'. There are many things that I refuse to support. My friends are aware not to seek support from me on those issues.

I can think of several answers:
-First,they don't like your question and can't answer it
-They just do it (as a joke)
-They think it's a ridiculous question
among others.The point is,don't give up no matter what answer you get.

To make themselves feel like they're better or more important. Or maybe they're having a bad day. Or maybe they're just plain nasty.
