Mostly likely just needs a fluid and filter change. Give that a try its the least expensive option and it should be done on all automatics at regular intervals anyway.
If you need step by step let me know. I have done it on these transmissions.

Somewhat. Ask a service tech. in your area if he thinks you should get a treatment of some sort. Maybe even a transmission flush, though they are a little steep in price, but if they help, sure are worth it. The problem is, it is probably because of worn seals or low presure because of a clogged filter. You might end up a new transmission in about 1 year or so with treatment. Check the level of trans. fluid it could be as simple as that! Good Luck

I have a Ford Taurus 1996 too, but this has never happened to me. If it did, I'd take it to the mechanic immediately. It can't be good.

Yes it is a big concern. please check fluid not saying yo havnt already. trany work onthis car is costly. hopefully you can get away with a trans flush. I changed the wifes 02 taurus at 75,000 and it has had no problems. You may want to have this checked. Buy a trusted mechanic.
