The chain that switches it on and off has not been functional for years. Do you have to shut off the power supply to fix this . Also how is it done - step by step- thanks
I have a 15 watt bulb in there now- would like it to be something stronger then I would turn it off and on.

It all depends on what kind of fixture you have and how it is wired. I will assume you have the old style light, say made of ceramic or plastic with a pull switch inside the fixture. The easiest way to repair it is by replacement. A new fixture of this type only costs a few dollars at a home center. Turn off the power by turning off circuit breakers one at a time if they are not labeled to tell you which is the one powering the light fixture. Check that you have the right one by making sure the light bulb that was on before you started switching breakers is off now. Then loosen the screws holding in the old fixture, you may have to remove, none, one or both depending on whether the fixture has no slots, one slot, or two slots. If just two holes and no slots, both screws have to be removed and then put back in with the new fixture. Once down from the ceiling, remove the three, or two, wires from the old fixture. Put the black wire on the dark screw on the new fixture, the white wire on the light screw and if there is a ground wire in the ceiling box, put it on the green screw. Put the fixture back up using the two screws that you used to loosen the other fixture, put is bulb, turn on breaker and you're done.

1 remove the fixture
2 take out the old switch (take with you to local home center get the same kind)
disconnect the wires prob have a wire nut on the hot and the switch leg
3 install new switch just like the old one was put new switch back into fixture and reinstall fixture to ceiling

that's it be sure to turn the power off at the wall switch or your breaker in your panel or pull the fuse which ether you have

You need to turn the power off, get to the fixture, take it down and replace the switching device with a new one. Or take the whole thing down and replace it wit a new fixture.
