I am an atheist because I don't believe in deities and the word atheist describes this state of disbelief. I don't believe in deities because no argument or evidence presented to me in support of their existence has been convincing.

1. Biology adequately describes life and emotions without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

2. Astronomy adequately describes the formation of stars/planets/universe/etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

3. Geology adequately describes the evolution of the Earth, land formations, etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

4. Psychology describes the human psyche better than appealing to mystical invisible dieties

5. Appealing to mystical invisible dieties is an appeal to ignorance

6. There's no physical evidence for the existence of mystical invisible dieties

7. A myriad of mystical invisible dieties have been posited by emphatically superstitious societies and have been proven to be products of overly active imaginations (today's religion is tomorrow's myth) and ignorance.

8. Believing in mystical invisible dieties seems to become quite absurd when those who posit the mystical invisible dieties begin explaining why and how they exist in the face of contradictory physical evidence.

9. As scientific knowledge increases, the role of the mystical invisible dieties oddly gets pushed further and further back.

10. Mystical invisible dieties are mystical invisible dieties (ie can never be found by empirical methods)

Most people are not blind. You can ask just about anyone about inconsistancies in their religion, it's leaders, and the like, and they can probably tell you what they are. There are fanatics who can't see these things... but most people are not fanatics even if they are religious. They just think that the good things they get outweigh whatever bad things they're exposed to.

If you are making you're own choices on the matter, then I can only be pleased for you. It is the very measure of adulthood to not just perform actions, but to determine which actions and even which ways of thinking are BEST and RIGHT.

The only thing I would caution you against is over-generalizing. It is no more true to say that all religion 'ties people down' than it is to say that all atheists are vicious monsters with no conscience. Some of the best people you are likely to ever meet are also very religious people. And some are not. But keep an open mind.

I, like most people, was raised in a religion and told many things that I came to observe were simply not true. I too drifted off to find my own way. And I am very happy with what I found. I can only hope other people are just as happy with what they discover... even if they find different things than I do.

The world is a very big place. One-size-fits-all almost always doesn't. Peace.

Atheism stands on science to negate the God and all associated activities of believers. Science in its pure form stands as rational and it does not look into the mental peace and happiness, one can get by prayers and the feel of almighty. This may be even guiding him/her to be a better person and to live in harmony with all in the society. In spite of all the negatives that galore on religious leaders, religious practices and the religion itself, the people still go behind due only to the fact that they find no place to wash their sins! They all earn money in wrong ways and spend too, same way! The moment they realize when the death is close by they only look upon religious charity as best way to wash their sins and to spend their money for a better cause! They cant give their wealth to rationalist but only to charity as the religion finds a way for him to heaven which he beleived too! The atheist on the other hand is a definite looser of all the charms of opposite camp! The religion need not be the guiding force to believe and pray the God! Hence the believers are generally not bothered all the time about what the church preach! However it is true, that the religious leaders of today has no method to talk convincingly about the God's existence and to confirm that God is really controlling our affairs on Earth since the Science and Technology is dominating the people's mind!

I was just under your age before switching teams. One thing I would say is that atheism isn't all you are. Try avoiding the trap of pride, there is no pride in not believing in something. Instead , take pride in the things you can accomplish. The people who wear atheism on there sleeve tend to become more cult like than the churches they break away from. The last thing you want to be is an asshole wearing ideology on your sleeve. Good luck on your life without religion, I found it to be a great growing experience.

Yes - I am an atheist. I came to be one by just questioning the whole thing. It is dagurous that, questioning - the 'powers that be' want us all to be good little christians and obay them. So they will encurrage us to question a used car sales man or the like but we are told NEVER to question the existence of a god.

At the same time I kicked out all the other useless superstitions like number 13, Tarot cards, Astrology etc. Life has been so much better since.

Asking questions. Indoctrination failed with me as I was assertive enough to ask questions on things which made no sense from the age of 5. I was fine with being banned from Sunday school for doubting and asking questions.

Why did this god rape a woman named Mary? He certainly did not have her consent to procreate. I was taught by the same religious people that having sex with someone without their consent was wrong. This god character is just a bad dude.

Who were the parents of all these gods that men have created over time? Was the god a big bang and just suddenly came onto the scene?

To me Religion is the epitome of hypocrisy. I do believe in a creator. I go with quantum physicists and theologins. They believe in the same thing just call it different names. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it goes from form to form. The QP's call it Energy, the Theo's call it God. What you believe now and in the future is a very personal thing. As you grow and learn your thinking may change on this issue or not. Again a very personal issue just as your eye or hair color, it is what it is.

im between ideas here. i dont neccecarily believe in god as the whole white clouds light and smoke god, or even the vengefull flaming sword and angels of death god. but i also don't know how we could have came to be otherwise. ive always figured that there is no way to know so why bother attempting to know anything about it. i wouldnt call myself an athiest, but i believe that my actions will be judged here on earth only (Karma kinda) but then again what about all the killers that get away and escape the system.

in short i have no clue what to think but noones gonna tell me what to think.

My conversion to non-belief was a slow process, that began with me as a devout teenager, and gradually ebbing away until in college when I finally admitted to myself that I no longer believed in the presence of a divine authority. For me, the beginning of the end began with a quote from the man I admire the most of all figures in history: Thomas Jefferson.

"Fix reason firmly in her seat, and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear."

From there, it was just a matter of convincing myself that reason bears no proof for the existence of God.

I would advise you, however, to place your newfound atheism under incredible scrutiny. Are you an Atheist because of a long intellectual journey that was filled with unanswered questions? Or are you doing it just to rebel from society. I've known too many proud and defiant Atheists who became "reborn" after they realized that their Atheism was really just juvenile rebellion against the establishment. Where do you think all of these "Born-again" Christians come from?

i learned that being responsible for my own actions led me to be much more moral than any organized religion allowed. i don't steal or kill or lie or covet or commit adultry. if you made a list of christians that could go all week without doing those 4 simple things your list would be very small. i think a judeo-christian ethic is very valuable from a philosophic standpoint -- much of the bible is very sound wisdom. that humans have poluted it into a golden calf over and over and over again -- well humans suck and the god in the bible even knew that.

organized religion demands money and submission. in return you get freed from your mistakes. if you can free yourself why pay for it?
