I've found them while wandering around in open praries. Try a forest preserve or something. Look underder logs and in debris. When I was a kid I'd find some piece of plywood or something and drag it out into an open field by my house. Set it down and check under it a week later for garter snakes, decay snakes (brown snake) and the occational rough green.

Being farther north than you I didn't have to even consider anything venomous so bring a hook or stick with ya!

Oh, and if you get an agressive green (none I caught ever bit me) but yea, the foot and a half or two feet of fury isn't even going to break skin so don't worry about it :)

Why do you need it so FAST!!!!??? Go buy one, if you don't even know where to look for one then you don't need to be keeping a wild-caught one.

EDIT:
I'm pretty sure it's a felony to remove wildlife from a preserve, so please don't take Michael E's advice.
