Preserving people's lives.

Oddly the "pro life" and "fiscally conservative" republican party (or so they call themselves) would rather kill 1000s more innocent people and waste more $billions than just admit they were lying and / or wrong about Iraq.

This is a very important point. It's not just Bush and Cheney.

The whole republican party helped Bush and Cheney every step of the way. Starting with lying to us about the Florida election, throwing out legal votes the and illegal Supreme Ct. decision to get Bush in. It went ahead with the tax cuts that gave $trillions of our money to Enron and Halliburton and Exxon-Mobil, etc. It got worse when Bush and Cheney and Rice ignored the 9/11 warnings and failed to protect us from 9/11 and the threat from Katrina, and the GOP Congress covering up all of that.

Also, the illegal war in Iraq and attacking the Constitution with illegal wiretaps and spying on innocent Americans and so much more. Just about the entire GOP was on board with all of this and should be held to blame for all the damage and death it caused.

Preserving peoples lives. Why?

Preserving peoples' lives of course but since I don't see that anyone is denying any mistakes or has made as many mistakes as I'm sure you think was made, it's a moot point.

For a politician? The latter.

And that's only one of many form of political expediency for which politicians are willing to sacrifice the lives of others.

For instance, the Democrat-controlled Congress could have ended the Iraq war by now (OK, by next month) through the simple expedient of not passing a funding bill at all. But they didn't, because it could be spun against them by thier political opponents.
