So say I am driving on D and the traffic keeps changing its pace. Would it be bad for my engine if I kept switching betwee D3 and 2 and D according to the flow of traffic? Basic question is, "Is it bad to shift between the different levers in an automatic trans. car while driving?

Doesnt matter at all.

And contrary to other opinions here it can be very useful to switch the auto down, particularly to slow down without using brakes too often -also because autos tend to change up in the gears to soon which can be too fast in slow traffic, even with the foot off the accelerator. I found my auto wasnt responsive to slowing itself down with engine braking, so to save brakes (and from braking all the time like an idiot) its good to shift it down to slow down.

You might be able to do that in a manual transmission but i would not do that in a vehicle with an automatic transmission as they are a lot more sensitive and that will put alot of stress on the transmission. You really arent saving any gas money because when you have to put it back into drive you will have to accelerate and that will use more gas than keeping a steady speed in drive. Gas engines waste the most fuel when starting an accelerating.

D3 is fine if it keeps coming out of overdrive constantly. But the other two are meant for using the engine to help slow the car down such as if you were coming down a steep mountain road.

It serves no purpose. The point of an automatic is to adjust the gear box to the correct speed and gear needed.
