increased demand from pop growth, and raising levels of income. this is tied with gov protection of the small farmer that can not keep up with the demand and has high average cost of production compared to larger corp farms

Like most problems, there are lots of aspects to this. Here are a few:

1) Increasing populations causing increased demand for food.
2) Higher gas prices cause higher costs to run farm equipment and transport food from farms to stores.
3) Government policies protecting small farms (as mentioned in a previous post).
4) Government promotion of ethanol as a fuel and as a fuel oxygenate (replacing MTBE) has increased the demand and thus the price for corn.

there is no secrete behind the growing of the food prices because as food becomes further away from the market place the price of this food or product increase. For example taking the banana prices it has been going up dramatically from about one year ago in Australia and this is because it stopped growing in the nearest place to the market in fact it is now mostly growing in Melbourne and the prices has gone u in Perth because of the distance.
