I have a 1999 Dodge Stratus. The left front brakes are metal-on-metal; however, the other three brakes are fine. The auto shop called and said they'd need to replace all 4 brakes since the calipers, etc. needed for the 1 faulty brake are sold in fours. Of course, this makes it more costly. Is it true I need to have all four done, even if only one needs fixing? Thanks.

If you have one brand new break and the rest are older, then you are going to have uneven breaking, which is going to make all of them wear out faster. So you don't HAVE to replace all four of them, but in the long run you'll be hurting yourself if you don't.

The bad seed above is right, too. At least make sure that the front or back ones are both new. If your car is a front wheel drive, have the new ones in the front if possible.

No its not true you only need the two front brakes done that will cost you $20.00 to $40.00 depending the quality. And you will probably a new rotor becuase metal to metal sometimes damages the rotor disk that cost no more than $30.00. They dont never come in packs of 4. and if you live near L.A. I will do them for almost nothing.

Scam you only need to replace the same axle this means both front brakes. take it to a different shop and tell them you need just the front done and I highly doubt the caliper needs replaced but if so they are sold as one.

If you do it yourself you could only replace the pads
Technically this is not the safest way to do this.
You could also get a new disc from a junk yard. If they are trying to sell you calipers and all the rest they are overdoing it. Go to a different brake shop
