Why do people believe that liberals are some whacked-out leftist group on the fringes of society?

In various polls conducted by various organizations, the current standings are:

26% - Americans who approve of the job Bush is doing

70+% - Americans who think we should withdraw from Iraq within the next year

90% - Americans who believe our health care system is flawed and needs to be changed or completely overhauled

76% - People who are willing to pay higher taxes to receive better health care

Yet the mainstream media talks about leaving Iraq and overhauling our health-care system as "leftist" or "liberal" causes. Doesn't that mean that most Americans are liberals? Why is the term "liberal" so vilified? WHAT GIVES HERE PEOPLE???

It's because extremist democrats tend to be the noisiest and get the most press attention, and they self-identify with the term "liberal." The mainstream Democratic party "platform" has gone so far left from where it used to be, the Dems of today would probably reject John F. Kennedy if he were alive and running for office today. Remember, JFK was pro-military and pro-tax cuts.

Many of the mainstream dems of yesteryear have been squelched or are just MIA. They either vote for another party - perhaps because they perceive that the Democratic party been hijacked by extremist groups - or they don't vote at all.

The farther left and more socialized the Democrat "platform" becomes, the more likely it is that if a Republican gets elected, he could be inept. It's because the nation gets stuck between the Scylla and Charybdis.

Feminists who believe one in every four men is a rapist, gays who believe anyone who disagrees with them is homophobic, blacks who believe anyone who disagrees with them is racist, extreme environmentalists who would be willing to tear your own house down to save an endangered white beetle....

this was not the face of the democratic party twenty-thirty years ago. It's been largely taken over by the special interest. The above groups, while perhaps not representing mainstream America, are nonethless the noisiest crowds in the media -- they are the ones always marching for some cause, self-proclaiming "liberals." They've really usurped the word and tarnished it over the years.

There has been a drive to "divide and conquer". It all began with that dumbass statement Bush made. When he began this war he said something to the effect of either you're with us or against us. Those of that knew he was lying and were against this war were then called unpatriotic. In our minds we were doing the very American thing and being very patriotic. We were taking our government to task for lies and wrong doing. I still won't back down from this and never will. This is a great way to lay the ground work for the NWO.

The Fox news thing has been beaten like a dead horse, it is bigoted rhetoric to refer to Conservatives as brainwashed by Fox news and it is the height of stupidity to discount your enemy in such a manner. I socialize in a very Conservative circle and no one I know watches Fox news or listens to Rush or watches NASCAR. Not one, none.

most americans are not liberal. look at the famous red / blue election maps, and recognize that the liberal areas are high-crime, high-welfare, low-employment areas populated by people with their hands out for generations.
