no, you can join AARP now at 50....and in my eyes 50...is the new 30ish.....AARP has a very good website, and also a users forum, but otherwise there is not much outta there free....
Tuesday at Kroger's its senior citizen day 5% off
Perkins and some Restaurants give 5% discounts....
free coffee at McDonald's, if you bring your mug!
I get more discounts with my AAA then AARP...

If you are a member of AARP that makes you a retired person, not necessarily a senior citizen. Many people retire early. If you need a discount on food and stuff, you can flash your AARP card, but be prepared to be challenged on it, because the discounts are for seniors and 51 is in some places, but not in all.

Nope, makes you a paying member of AARP, qualifies you for discount insurance through them, discounts at motels, etc. as a card holder. But other than that, senior discounts vary with the establishment...55, 60, my barber shop is 62, SS is 65+ some number of months, etc.

I'm in the UK and don't know what AARP is. 51 years does not constitute a senior citizen in UK ,you have to be 65.Also you do not get any discounts on shopping. At 65 you get a state old age pension on top of any company or private pension.

I started getting mail from AARP when I turned 50.The only discount I get is cheaper car insurance. I'm 52 now and still no extra discounts but I never ask and probably won't until I get SS.

It pays sometimes to have an AARP card, like at an amusement park fee (only about $1.00 off) at Busch Gardens, etc..
But every time I try to get a senior discount, the age keeps going up! Now I think most discounts that you could really use are up between 60 to 65. When I get to those ages, it will go up probably to age 70. Geez

AARP is for seniors but doesn't hand out free food. AARP doesn't make you a senior, your age makes you a senior. Most places will not accept you as a senior until you are 55, 60 or 65.

the definition of senior citizen varies depending on who you are asking. Some say it is insulting, some say it begins at a certain age generally anywhere between 50 and 65. The American Association of Retired People (former name of AARP), has lowered the age to 50 in order to be able to receive money from the largest base of people possible.
They use the numbers of the membership to influence laws and other considerations in favor of the board members of the group.

Most places accept AARP cards for senior discounts regardless of age. They just assume you must be.
Rock out with those discounts!
