I asked my parents to let me get an acoustic guitar, and they said that I can try it out at my cousin's house, but I now decided I want an electric guitar instead. My parents say that it is weird. How do I let them know it isn't?

They think that music like hard rock and metal is weird.

You can point out that a decent electric guitar is less expensive than a poor acoustic.

You can get a decent electric, a practice amp and everything else you need to get started for $200 bucks.

Whereas to get even a decent acoustic guitar, you would have to spend $300. It wouldn't be as versatile, might not inspire you to practice as much ( because it is usually harder to play well) and it is much more delicate than an electric.

Acoustics require care to maintain and prevent damage. Electrics are virtually indestructible unless you try to bust 'em. You have to be really incompetent, careless or stupid to mess up an electric.

OH YES!
You should tell them that the electric is quieter!

That's right! Although electric guitars can be loud when played through an amp, if you practice without the amp or use headphones, you will barely be heard. That's good for both the budding shy musician and the peace-loving, noise-hating, hard-working parents! Electric guitars can promote domestic bliss.

cheaper
easier
versatile
durable
quiet

If that doesn't do it, go earn two hundred bucks!

If you don't have the work-ethic to earn that tiny amount of money, then you will never learn guitar.

If you just demonstrate that you are serious enough to WORK, they might meet you halfway.

How's an electric guitar wierd? Are they from MARS? I know more people that own an electric guitar than an acoustic. Is that the ONLY reason why they won't let you jave one, or is there more?

if they think getting an electric guitar is weird then they probably don't play an instrument. they that will be learning the same lessons on the electric as you would as an acoustic,

I would get the acoustic first. Then you can learn actual rhythms of a song. You'll need to know these rhythms in order to play lead over top of them. So get the acoustic first and then get the electric later on. Plus, if you start becoming a songwriter, then you'll need the acoustic to write with properly. :-)
