I don't care if only 10% of people vote, as long as those who do actually understand the issues they are voting for or against.
If we had mandatory voting, you'd have the dregs of society just voting blindly. We'd have people who don't even know the names of the candidates voting. It wouldn't mean anything. Increasing the percentage of voters would be the same as the government trying to increase the population through forced procreation by compelled gay men to marry a woman. I dont think that's going to produce a lot more children.
Mandatory voting would only help the Democratic party, because they are the ones who shamelessly pander to people, especially to the stupid, the lazy, the greedy, the desperate and the clueless.
Voting with no knowledge of the candidates or the issues is a wasted vote anyway.

Do the people also have a right not to voice there opinion? I believe that the lack of voters is due to frustration in the candidates, to force someone to vote for an individual they do not care for would be preposterous. An additional question with this would be how would this action be policed, if 50% are not voting wouldn't we have to have an extremely large police force?

all educated people speak the same language, have the same ideas as you do. india is multi ethinic linguistic country and the rich poor divide is ever increasing. it is the poor who hope that life will change with every vote vote for a government. it is government that takes well fare measures for the people. yes the system is currupt and we have been trying to change it every where. such a huge population makes it difficult for everyone to change things significantly.

I suppose you could abolish the fifth amendment so you didn't have the phrase, "nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law". Just as we have the "liberty" to vote, we have the "liberty" not to vote as well. The constitution takes about twenty minutes to read in it's entirety including the twenty seven amendments. I'd suggest you do some homework.

In the United States, part of the problem is people voting without any clue what they are voting for. I think less people should vote and if there is one item on the ballot that you are not familiar with, leave that item blank - don't guess. If you are not familiar with the contestants and issues, please don't vote at all.
