This depends on what you mean by lost:
If you had meant just deleted files, they are in your recycle bin, for that you can just select the files inside of it and use the menu to "restore items"

If you emptied your recycle bin or something like a virus came along, this will usually be more difficult. If they really disappeared, they may end up being rewritten over by this time by new data.

But there are undelete tools like r-undelete at http://www.r-undelete.com/ that work quite well. But they only work well if the data you want has not been written over top.

Then if Windows isn't working, you can use a program like Selkie Rescue at http://www.selkierescue.com/. It allows you to pick and choose your files that you need (which makes it quick since there is no time consuming hard drive analysis ahead of time) off your broken computer onto a second computer. This helps so that you restore the broken computer back. But at least you have your files safe.

The next level is for when the hard-drive is actually physically failing. then you should go to companies like Ontrack at http://www.ontrack.com/labdr/ This is very good but very expensive so you data has to be worth it or you could just be rich and not mind the expense.

I hope that this helps

Hi. Yes, just select "Undo last restore point". If that works follow the good advice and back up your files!

not really. if you're willing to spend thousands of dollars, the data forensics types can try to recover it, but they're not going ot be able to get them all.

Not unless you took a back up. No backup = screwed.
