NO home remedies! No Dawn Dish soap, no garlic - I know they're cheap - most things that don't work are.
Fleas are tricky to get rid of once they're present, but there are tried and tested methods that a vet can help you with. You do need to get an over-the-counter treatment from your vet - not a petshop.
1) You must treat both the environment and animals to get rid of fleas, as their lifecycle involves both.
2) Adult fleas lay thousands of eggs, that you can't see, on your animal and in your home. The eggs can't be killed by most treatments, neither can the pupae that they hatch in to, but the adults they develop into can be killed by most treatments.
3) Use a veterinary spot-on, I recommend Frontline, on your cats every month. Make sure it gets on the skin, not the fur. It will spread throughout the entire cat and kill all fleas within 24 hours.
4) Spray your house with a veterinary treatment, vaccuum the next day and then repeat a few days later to get the remaining flea eggs that will have hatched.
5) Once this infestation is sorted (can take up to a month, maybe only a week though) use Frontline Plus on your cats every 6 weeks - it treats both them and the environment because it does kill flea eggs.
I'm afraid you will need to spend a little, not a fortune, to get rid of fleas now they're present!

we have tried eveything over the years (moved into a house where the previous owner had animals and apparantly did not know what flea spray was) stage 1... do the cats with frontline stage 2.. do the house with an initial burst of frontline stage 3 the only thing we have found that is a permenant, effective defence is some weird lamps.. they hold a nightlight style bulb and a sticky pad, the fleas are attracted to the warmth of the bulb, and stick on the pad... we have used them now for two years and have been completely free of fleas (yet the gadget catches about 50 a month)... they had become resistant to all sprays, bombs and everything else.. (the lamps are available on ebay for about £10/$20) after being plauged by fleas for years i would highly recommend them.. they really do work... but complete blitz of the house with frontline first, and make sure all pets are treated monthly with the spot on treatment (or better if you can afford it) (and iu know where your coming from.. we had spent hundreds of pounds of flea sprays and bombs and just baout got things under control.. took four days away from the house to get married, came back, and you could literally see them jumping around... the lamps where the first thing that realy kept the house clear) of course i hold no legal responsibility if you spend £50 on lamps and they dont work for you.... they did for us.. and after 30 years the first thing that really has...

I experienced the same type of problem. NOTHING worked.....UNTIL I used two things in combination. One was carpet freshener powders. The other was boric acid. Use BOTH. in combination, the baking powder that is in the carpet freshener, and the boric acid kill the fleas. They eat it, and the larvae eat it. Both powders are fairly inexpensive and harmless UNLIKE the chemicals in flea bombs. You sprinkle them both all over the floors and along the edges of the rooms, both carpeted and hardwood floors. Leave it there for at least two weeks, do not sweep unless you absolutely have to. If you do sweep, make sure to sprinkle the floors again as soon as possible to kill the larvae as they do hatch on a daily basis. It is messy for a while, but so much better to have a dusty floor for a couple of weeks than to be bitten all the time by pesky fleas!! This absolutely works. I didn't believe it until I tried it myself.

Sounds like you need to get really aggressive about your flea problem.
Probably need to use a few of those flea bombs. Take the cat to the groomer for a flea treatment. Ask your vet about a flea treatment like Frontline (I know dogs use it, but don't know about cats, never had one) Flea collars don't really work.
After you have it under control, a non-chemical solution that I've found effective is 20 Mule Team Borax. In the laundry section of the grocery store. Put it in a salt shaker and use it on your cat, rub it in... sprinkle it on your carpets and upholstery. Something in it... guess it's the borax, kills fleas. It works really well.
Good luck!

My wife and I adopted a kitten from the pound and didn't notice until we got home that he was crawling with fleas. :(
We tried everything we could buy, to no avail. Then a friend suggested we mix a little Dawn dishwashing soap with water in a spray bottle and spray the cat as well as the rest of the house. I was shocked that you could actually witness the death throws of those little beasts as soon as the solution hit them.
we've never had a problem again after we gave the whole apt. a good spritzing. It's cheep and safe and better than anything you can buy at the pet store.
Hope this helps!

I know how you feel. My dog had fleas a few years ago. Flea Powder works really well for carpets, and its not too expensive. As for the fleas on your cat, the only way we found that really works well is drowning them (the fleas). But that might be more difficult for you since you have a cat and they don't like water... Sorry, I wish I could be more of a help.

I had the same problem with my dog and my cat! There are these pills called Capstar that will start working within 30 minutes! There's also a powder that you sprinkle all over the house, you let it sit, and you vaccum it up. It works wonders my dog had fleas so bad she was losing hair but we gave her Capstar and she looked like a whole new dog. Look on the website www.petmeds.com

Use an insect bomb for your house then treat the cat with flea treatment. It is a pain to use the bombs because you and the cat have to be out of the house for 3 hours but it works.
