I moved to MD from Chicago (GO BEARS!!) and at first I couldn't understand why everyone was such a die hard fan for a team that can't carry the ball all that well. Here's what I learned by watching them:
Consistency
They don't have it. It took some time to get rid of the old coach before Gibbs came in and tried to take over. It's to be expected with the first season with a new coach that it won't go that well. Players were getting upset because they weren't playing their position to his expectations and were being placed at second and third string. Players are also getting traded or hurt constantly that its hard to build comradery.
QB
If Campbell would have been in for the entire season, you would have had a better shot. You were soooo dependent upon Brunell, there was a fear of putting Campbell in. Now that Campbell stands to get more playing time because he has proved his ability as the QB, just MAYBE you will have a shot.
As far as the Redskins making the playoffs, they might have shot. They have an awesome coach, a decent QB, now they just have to try and improve their offense and defense. When watching them, it seems as if they are afraid to carry the ball or even give a really good hit.
They have the potential to be a really good football team that with a little work, they could win the Superbowl in the next four years. The players have to be willing to die for their QB and I don't think they are quite ready to do that. I mean look at the Bears (My fav team), even with a QB who was afraid to take chances to gain yards, we still made it to the Superbowl. So, there is always a possibility.

The Redskins have been erratic recently, but everyone seems to be forgetting that their defense HAS been very good in recent years, except for last year.
Plenty of injuries last season, including Springs, who was their #1 CB. You put him in there with more depth (Butler, Macklin, Smoot), better leadership at LB (Fletcher), a great duo at Safety (Landry is apparently a beast to go alongside Taylor) and a D-line that was starting to gel (Carter finished the season strong; Montgomery and Golston were big susprises and could make an impact), and I think you have a solid if not above-average defense.
And for the record, if Jason Campbell doesn't go out there and perform this year, I'll be shocked. I'm not saying playoffs though, but keep in mind, they're only 1 year removed. I say 9-7.

I think they have a shot at a playoff berth provided the defense gets back to being a top 10 D. Jason Campbell has looked great in mini camp this summer although he has no one in his face during OTAs. They could surprise some people this year. I say a 10-6 record is possible.

No, if the Washington Redskins lose to the Dallas Cowboys in Week 17, they'll choose the Minnesota Vikings to lose to the eco-friendly Bay Packers AND the Chicago Bears could lose to the Detroit Lions, in Week 17, to make it to the playoffs.

The QB is the most important position in football. And it's that position Washington has failed to fill with a competent player. Sure, Portis is great. But a star RB alone cannot save a franchise. (See Detroit circa Barry Sanders)
So no, the 'skins will not make the playoffs. Not until they get their QB situation settled.

No. You aren't a playoff team without a stud qb. The Redskins haven't had a good one for a long time, and they haven't bothered to go out and get one. They are not committed to being a top team. They don't have to as long as their zombie fans keep selling out the stadium to watch a mediocre team get beat every week.

i say yes, i am a niners fan, so i am not biased. they will be 9-7 and barely edge out the cowboys for the final nfc wildcard spot. the championship will be the niners and saints, with the niners facing the patriots in the superbowl.

Not this year. Campbell has to mature more and prove he is a starting QB; Portis has to stay healthy; defense has to get way better. They will improve from last year, maybe 7-9 or 8-8.
