Windows Media Player should play avi files provided it is set up to. Open Media Player, go to Tools>Options>File Types and if avi is not selected in the list, then select it and try again.

Go to the microsoft update website and download the latest codecs for windows media player, if you're using windows media player. Also check that you have .avi files associated with a media player, ie: open windows media player options and click on the Files tab and check to see that .avi files box is checked... OR, Like Jake said...download VLC player. That Plays just about anything. cnet.com

Might just be a codec issue. Try downloading the XP codec pack and see if that takes care of your problem.

You can get it here: http://www.xpcodecpack.com/

After installing that, you should be able to play most current files with windows media player.

Get the G-Spot Codec Appliance and use it to find out what video codec is being used.

It's either DivX, XviD or H264.

Then download the appropriate codec.

Try to avoid downloading 'packs' as these can lead to conflicts and you will be back to square one.
