Are you confusing us with poorer countries? We don't have millions living on the "existence minimum" - what we do have is a welfare system second to none, with health care for everyone from cradle to grave. As for our Monarchy, we like to do things with style and dignity as befits a former Empire. We don't need to justify - to anyone.
As we say here : "Vivat Elizabetha Regina"

Ok, in the interest of full disclosure, I am a royalist. I am afraid I have to disagree with you on all points. In the most recent audit of the Royal Family's finances, it was determined that they cost each Brit about 69 p. a year - so in reality, they cost us very little. The vast majority of their income comes from their own property - for instance, Charles gets most of his money from the Duchy of Cornwall, which he personally owns. The Civil List really funds very little of their expenses.
Second, I think that they do actually contribute significantly to tourism. Many of the most important tourist attractions belong to the Royal Family and if we were to become a republic, they would probably cease to be available to the public.
Thirdly, as I think is clear from many of the responses, the British as a whole love the monarchy. It is part of what, in my opinion, makes us British. Even in 1994, the lowest recorded approval rate for the Queen ever, she had a rating of 80% approval - far higher than nearly any other head of state or government. The senior members of the family, including the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of York and the Princess Royal perform hundreds of activities a year - the Queen attends events nearly every day. They are our representatives, our head of state. Furthermore, I believe that they are politically useful - the Queen meets with the PM once a week to advise him, and has done so since Winston Churchill was PM. She has seen 10 PM's come and go, and has far more experience than most of the minister if only because she has been our head of state since she was 25.
I for one am quite happy to keep paying my 69p for that sake of this insitution.

Of course we have the democratic right to say just about anything we like about them and we do. I am not a big fan of the Royal Family. I would like a slimmed down version of them but compared to President Blair or President Thatcher I'll take the Queen, outmoded, German and stupidly anachronistic as she is. But saying what we like and not being rubbishly patriotic is what makes me proud to be British! We don't salute the flag. Swear allegiance to the Queen. Get all soppy about God Save the United Kingdom. We don't invest our leader with Godlike power or significance like the American's do. We take the piss and hurray for that!

Personally I feel that the Royal family are an excellent investment, both tourist wise, and for reasons of Trade and Industry . They are conscious of their duty as opposed to current elected leaders, who seem to think that they should be able to exploit the trappings of office, rather than serve the public who elected them. The Queen was raised to put duty before self, and for the last 60 years she has done so at no small cost to herself. The younger royals may not be as dedicated to duty, but I would trust them a great deal more than some of our so called elected leaders.

Tourists do come to London for other reasons and the Royals don't contribute much except to look like figurines on diplomatic visits, they have no real power and can even commit murder without being tried. We can go to prison for committing treatment against a Royal but if we abuse a subject this is seen as a lesser crime. These people are not superior and should not enjoy prefential treatment.
They should be sponsoring a lot more projects with all that wealth.

There are some people in the UK who want just men in business suits running the government, while there are many others who want to keep the monarchy and the parliamentary system as it is.
There is something amiss in the reasoning posted here.Condemn them because they happen to be rich? What are you going to do,kill every rich person in the world? No one has the right to condemn another human being solely because of their financial worth! The converse of that thought is to kill people just because they are poor. That is not wise.Condemning someone because they lie, cheat, steal and kill, just because they feel like it,is understandable, but condemning them just because they have financial wealth like many people do(Bill Gates,Donald Trump,Madonna,David Beckham,Oprah Winfrey...)is not wise!
And from the point of view of a tourist,I'd rather visit a country that takes esteem in its history and has the pageantry and pomp of the monarchy that it is well-known for.

You are missing the point. Britain is NOT a democracy.Until the house of lords is abolished we can never be a democracy. And as for royalty please don't get me started on that one except to comment on the awful thought of the royal adulterers being crowned. Hopefully if that charade comes to pass we might see an end of the royal family and all who scrounge in her....
