The books "What Liberal Media" and "Watchdogs of Democracy" make their points very clear that while conservative parties are in office they exert much more media control than when liberal parties are in power. This is primarily because the conservative often views the news as a means to an end rather than a reporting of fact.
However, the control they exert is only as limited as the influence they have. In a country that is based on capitalist conservatism, the amount of ratings that can be generated by a given release will dictate what will be released in what priority. In a socialist conservatism, as the government is ultimately responsible for redistribution, the media releases will be based on departmental approval.
In a more liberal environment, however, the media release is dictated more by the individual owners of the media sources. However, an important note here is that most large media corporations are indeed owned and operated by conservative magnates.

The Liberals.......
To determine the bias of media outlets, Milyo and colleague Tim Groseclose, a political scientist at UCLA, applied the Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) scoring system .
The results demonstrate a strong liberal bias. All news outlets examined, except for Fox News' Special Report and the Washington Times, received a score to the left of, or more liberal than, the estimated position of the average U.S. voter. The scores for CBS Evening News and the New York Times were among the most liberal, while outlets such as USA Today, NPR's Morning Edition, NBC's Nightly News and ABC's World News Tonight were moderately liberal. The most neutral outlets were the Newshour with Jim Lehrer, CNN's NewsNight with Aaron Brown and ABC's Good Morning America. Fox News' Special Report, while more conservative, was closer to the center than any of the three major networks' evening news broadcasts.

MSNBC.com identified 144 journalists who made political contributions from 2004 through the start of the 2008 campaign, according to the public records of the Federal Election Commission. Most of the newsroom checkbooks leaned to the left: 125 journalists gave to Democrats and liberal causes. Only 17 gave to Republicans. Two gave to both parties.

I saw that a couple of people wrote that big business and the American Public own the media stations, but in my opinion, it is the other way around. Those who watch the mainstream media are owned by them. They are primarily left based, and therefore, more and more people are believing only what they are told by the media, and running with it. If it's on the news, it has to be true! I refuse to watch my local news because it is so biased, and more often than not, certain/conservative aspects of the story are left out. I wish the conservatives owned the media . . . .

I doubt that either control the media... however those in the media have a very left leaning world view and that comes out in what is covered and how it is reported. There is no overt control, it is just the reporters and editors prejudices showing through in the coverage of the news.

The majority of the people in the media contribute to democratic candidates and liberal causes. If you want real news, then watch/read multiple sources - ie: The Washington Post (liberal) and The Washington Times (conservative). CNN (liberal) and FOX (conservative). Remember that the truth is somewhere in the middle.

That depends on who you are asking. The Republicans will tell you it is a liberal media. Here is what I think. They all report the same thing no deviating from the status quo. I think they are given subjects that have been approved and report from this. Doesn't matter whether it has a liberal or conservative slant it's all the same.

If you were in control of the media , who would you choose. You got one TV station that likes the Cons., why because they see them everyday just looking for a argument.. Take a good look at Fox and tell me what you see a bunch of complete bunch of smart mouths and uglier bunch than I have never seen on any one channel. Where they pick them up from , I'll never know. Just another bunch of ignorant empty headed Republicans.

Conservatives and liberals collectively control various forms of media. No one group has ownership of it in its entirety.
