Hi all, I have looked around a little bit for a solution to this, but I haven't really found the answer I am looking for. The other day, when I took the lid off my small Betta bowl (abt 1/2 gal) that sits on my desk at work, and poured the food in for the bettas, the male, a bit excited about the food, jumped up, overshot and landed out of the bowl and on my desk. I was able to immediately get him back in the water, but now, 3 days later, he is struggling to get to the bottom of the tiny tank, and gives up and floats back to the top. He occasionally rolls to his side as he floats on the top. I read that this could be a swim bladder rupture. Some people are saying a fish can "live through it and live on"... but I guess I am wondering if it is an incredibly painful, stressful life. I just changed his water and gave him a pea few minutes ago incase it isn't rupture, but would it be better for him if I just ended it for him now. Anyone who knows fish physio would be best! Thanks!

Its a little betta tank with a divider in the middle with a male and a female. In terms of what method do I use to cull fish... i put a bowl of water in the freezer until just a thin layer of ice has formed across the top (just at freezing) and i put the fish in so it is immediate.
MM, its good to know it is unlikely to be a rupture. He seems to be eating the pea, so I'll wait and see thanks so much!

It's rather doubtful he actually ruptured his swim bladder. The swim bladder of a fish is very tough. It's fiberous and covered in muscles and connective tissue. More likely is that he swallowed air and needs to pass it. Continue to feed him peas if he will eat them and wait it out, it could take a few days.

It's also possible he developed an infection, but this is less likely than swallowing air or developing a blockage from the fall.

Your fish is most likely constipated. You did the right thing with the pea. Fast him for a day and see if he is better. I have only had this problem a few times and the pea worked for my fish. And how exactly are you planning on ending it now? Just let him be, most fish will be fine and with swim bladder there is no pain. I noticed you typed Betta's? Do you have more than 1 fish in such a tiny bowl? You shouldn't have but one betta in that bowl. Females and males do not mix in such a small tank.

relies upon on the way you feed the pea. yet I doubt that would nicely be the concern in any case. I extremely have under no circumstances seen some thing like it even if the puffed pinecone structure of her scales make me ask your self no matter if it is a few thing else. What length tank is she in? Filteration? conserving on water ameliorations and cleansing? got here across this on-line about bettas... Dropsy - that is between the most deadly ailments to attack bettas; regrettably, its also between the most elementary. The jury continues to be out on precisely what motives it, and for this reason what treatments it. there's a concept that it would nicely be a bacterial an infection of the kidneys, yet no man or woman fairly is conscious for particular. the same old cautioned clinical care is Tetracycline, yet that is so seldom thoroughly powerful as to be inconclusive. To added complicate concerns, there looks quite a few variances of dropsy. the most nicely-favourite (and the most frightening, IMO) is at the same time as the tummy of the fish swells up grotesquely, the scales protrude like a pinecone, and the fish won't be able to look to get out of the 'abdomen down' position, mutually with his hind-end raised. The bloating is led to through added fluid interior the body tissues, and is frequently obvious in all dropsy situations. in some situations the fish receives in elementary words mildly pineconed, and nevertheless die of dropsy. I had a lady act torpid, pass off her feed, and he or she wasn't recuperating...i could not make certain out what became incorrect mutually with her. Then i spotted the tummy section became searching somewhat swollen and intensely light, so I regarded at her from above - voila. there became the pineconing. by the fashion, this female died 2 days into clinical care, and that i did not even comprehend she became useless till an afternoon or so after that. The fluid led to her to stay in an upright position mutually with her nostril to the exterior, and if it wasn't for the actual truth her eyes glazed over she regarded for each of the international precisely as she had at the same time as she first were given ill. yet another exciting version of dropsy is at the same time as the fish seems wide-spread (or would nicely be somewhat light), yet is off its feed and under no circumstances performing 'good'. those will in some situations do the tummy-down-tail-up habit, yet should not be swollen, and is probably not pineconed. this variety of dropsy is the most threatening! interior 24 hours the fish is useless, and also you do not even get a danger to attempt to remedy it.

Don't kill him off just yet. Go to a good pet store and consult with them about the situation. There's a good chance there is some medication out there that could solve the problem. Give the little guy a shot at life. Trust me, I know it's hard watching them suffer but sometimes they do make a full recovery and last for months after the situation.
