Because i have a sagem f@st 800-840 modem i have to connect my wireless rout to the internet by sharing the connection. but by doing this i plug the ethernet cable from the internet port on the router to the computer. i dont use any of the LAN ports and to install the router it says that you have to use one od the LAN ports to plug the ethernet cable to the computer but i plug it into the internet port.

Check the Cable Connections
1) Verify that the blue Ethernet cable is securely inserted in the router and securely inserted in the computer.
2) Check the status lights on the router.

The power light should be on.

The LAN port light should be on for the port where the blue NETGEAR cable is connected.

The Internet light should be on.

The Internet connection of the router should connect directly to the modem, if the modem has no LAN port you will need a different modem. You then connect all the pcs, including the original to the router.

You must connect the router WAN port to the modem. Any other connection will fail.

All down stream devices connect either via wire or wireless means to the router.

Configure the router as it tells you to do. Always use a wired cable to link to router when you do configurations and tests. Get a wired link working first, then worry about the wireless.
