In my youth , working late was the lie I told as not to hurt feelings. It allowed me to see many people of who I never said those three words, but there was so much more to say.
I never lied to women , there were things I just never said. I wasn't often available but kept good records , dates , what they wore , clothes perfume etc.
My only lie was my unavailability.
In my old age, I try to have none.

I really don't like using lies...my favorite excuse is I need to get the other line. How sweet was it that the phone mfg made a button to push for the volume that makes it ring?

"I Forgot", I have a near-photographic memory so 95% of the time I didn't really forget. I call it "near-photographic" because I do forget sometimes.
