Depends on what resolution you scan/print it at.

If you scan at 300 dpi (dots per inch) it's 8.5 x 11 x 300 x 300

It depends on the resolution (i.e. 640X480) . It could be one big pixel, ten smaller pixels, 100 even smaller pixels or millions of teeny tiny little pixels.

Without DPI (how many dots appear in a single line horizontally--1 linear inch) resolution, the question can't be answered

to get your answer it is

DPI * DPI * 93.5

where 93.5 is the total square inches
