I have recently added a wireless access point to my existing wired router, i have managed to set up a connection with my laptop which has software which came with the wireless card however when i try to connect either of my flatmates computers to the wireless with the standard windows xp connection software it comes up with searching for ip address and never finds one, the auto allocate ip address function is activated on the router and access point and it worked on my laptop . i have tried inserting an ip address manually but it still will not connect, any ideas

Cheers

Hi

I've been through all of the obvious things, including checking if the pc's have wireless cards! all is well on the settings front including the mac addresses in the access point, all of the laptops show very good signals and they are next to each other, they connect but they won't find an ip adress so the interned/network won't work

Log onto the router and see if you have mac address filtering (also known as hardware address, or physical address) you may have to put in the mac address before it will connect.
the mac address on you PC or laptop can be found by clicking
'start' - 'programs' - 'accessories' - 'command prompt'
then, at the prompt type "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes) then enter

Do these pcs have a wireless network adapter? If they are desk tops, they probably do not; if they are notebooks they might but then again they may not. First make sure you have wireless cards in them and that they are properly configured.

Move the pcs next to your working wireless notebook so you are sure the signal to and from the access point is strong and not blocked by walls, ducts, etc.

If you still have connection problems, check your configuration set up on the access point and on the pcs. If you have MAC address validation security (you should), then you must enter the pcs wireless nic MAC address (not the regular nic MAC address).

This should work

By the way NEVER communicate with your wireless access point via wireless, always use a wired connection.

Check the number of dhcp allocations allowed on the router, there may not be enough for all the machines, if so increase the allocation. Turn off mac filtering, use encryption for security. Also use the laptops own configuration programs, not the windows zero configuration. You can try diferent types of encryption, some cards work better with WEP, some with WPA.

Each computer you want to run off your router needs a wireless card, this is how the other computers connect getting a signal from the router. You will not do it through windows,.These cards cost about £19.99 each. I know this cuz we have two other computers running off our router..

Call technical support 24/7 whoever is the maker of the router. They will guide you through several things until it is fixed.
