Has anyone successfully done this?

The Mac is either 10.3 Panther or 10.4 Tiger. I would like to control it with Ubuntu, or can use another Linux OS (or will even try Windoze XP if I must).

Thanks!

You can simply use Ubuntu and the Gnome-RDP remote desktop, which supports several protocols including VNC, RDP, SSH, etc.

There are numerous other open source Remote Desktop clients available also, just use the Ubuntu Synaptic Package Manager to get them.
