What do they mean when they say that? what exactly are they asking?

As opposed to what sort of mean "versus"

For example:
You could go outside and play "as opposed to" staying cooped up inside the house.

You could go outside and play "versus" staying cooped up inside the house.

Close to Carmen. "As opposed to" is not a comparizon.To be more specific, it is a way to show differences when compared with another person or thing. It means "on contrast"."As opposed to his brother, Mike is a good student". Mike's brother is not a good student.

It's pretty obvious. I guess you're new to the country, huh? I doubt it, though. Most foreigners learn English as the english would speak it. Which would be a lot more effective than American english, as well as subtle.

It's sometimes used in a sarcastic way to say that something is not good enough or that it's not all it's cracked up to be.
Also, in literal terms it means "In comparison to what?"
