It used to be, because Windows could only address drives of limited size. Windows no longer has that restriction.
If using XP or Vista I think your better off using it as one big drive. Then have another physical drive for backup.
You can divide it into to two or more logical drives, but it's still one physical entity. If it the c:\ portion of the drive fails, your still going to lose the d:\ portion.
To modify the partition you run a utility called f-disk.

It is better to divide it up, the reason is incase the operating system crashes you can save all of your data on the other drive and just rebuild the operating system drive. You can do this a few ways depending on what OS you are running, if it is windows then you need to download a third party hard drive program to do this. Google "partition magic" it is a good program that i have used before.

Some people do, i personally dont. Too much work for too little benefit. people i know who've done it split the HDD like that so they can have one part for just the operating system and the other part for personal files and programs. That way if the HDD needs to be wiped, you just re-install on the operating system part of the drive that way if you get a virus you dont lose personal files. However, viruses can be on the personal files drive as well, I dont like it.
