I have a two-door stand alone hardening freezer by Master Built. It is a year and a half old and recently has began running very loud. Its still maintains its temperature very well but is just noisy. I had a service tech out and he says the compressor is "shot".

1. Is it typical for a compressor to be “shot” in a year and a half?

2. Can the compressor be rebuilt/repaired instead of replaced?

It is rare that a compressor goes out that fast, but I have seen it happen... And yes it can be replaced if necessary... The question I have is that where the noise is really coming from? Sounds to me like you may have a bad evaporator or condenser fan motor that may just be rattling, or hitting on something... The reason I say this is that if the compressor was shot, it wouldn't cool as good as it does... Try to pinpoint the location of the noise yourself, and see if it's actually the compressor that is bad... Most service techs are legit in their diagnosis, but some just like to always condem everything, cause, they don't want to spend the time to fix the problem and would rather just collect the service fee of looking at the unit...
