There are several words that are totally contradictory to "fad" in certain ways, but the existence of more than one means that neither is a true antonym.
A fad being a temporary fashion craze, either "trend" or "style" would describe something more enduring, while "flop" would describe something that never even gained enough popularity to become a fad.
I don't think it would be correct to say that there is an antonym for "fad".

If we were talking about how VCRs were popular (the fad) and then replaced by DVDs (also the fad), I would say the antonym would be some technology that could not be replaced - perhaps "static" would be the best technical antonym of fad.

You could argue that the opposite of 'fad' or craze is 'normal', 'traditional' or 'common'.
But I would say a more appropriate antonym, especially for fashion or technology, would be 'passé' (meaning fallen out of fashion, old-fashioned, "so last year" etc)
Not sure if that word is used much in the US though!

In terms of a "fad" meaning something that is fleeting and will soon pass, one antonym could be "staple" something that is long lasting and considered basic raw materials. Just one option, I guess it really depends on what it is your looking for exactly.
