I am not getting the desired sound from my stereo equipment. I have a 31-band dbx want to fine tune the sound, but I just can't get it right....where is more bass...more treble...what's an easy way to begin the process once you have zeroed or flat lined the control sliders.

A 31-band equalizer filters the frequency spectrum into 1/3 octave bands, allowing you to adjust the level of each frequency band separately.

To get more "bass" you will want to boost the lower frequency (or the sliders on the left side). To get more "treble" you should boost the higher frequencies (the sliders on the right side). It's a good rule of thumb that no neighboring set of sliders should be more than 3dB different.

Different styles of music require different equalization. Just experiment with adjusting the EQ and use what sounds best. Good Luck.

The best way to start off when equalizing is to arrange all the 'equalizing sliders' in the shape of a big 'V', i.e. the first setting put all way to top, then step a notch down for each additional setting until you reach setting 15 or 16, then start going up a notch. The buttons will look something like this:
X --------X
X------X
-----X-------
Just like a 'V'.
This will give you a 'basic' club/bar/dance music setting you can then adjust to your own tastes! :-) good luck & fun!
