It was certainly this way in WW2 Japan, and it seems to creep its way into society every so often. It seems that some take patriotism to an extreme and forget why this country is great. This countries freedoms of speech, religion, press, are sacred institutions that must be protected from extremism of both sides. The extremism that threaten our institutions can be considered a religion because it invokes such passion in some cases that rational thought is disregarded.

You know, there was a time in America when everyone understood what patriotism was and pretty much everyone was a patriot. Now, people ask questions like this and get all kinds of odd answers. Just look at the definition in American Heretage Dictionary: pa·tri·ot (n.) One who loves, supports, and defends one's country.
Why has this become such a foreign concept? Part of the reason is that public education no longer teaches the average American student more than a cursory lesson of the Founding and History of their own country. They no longer teach Georgraphy, either. Geography class taught you quite a bit about how your life stacks up against the lives of people in other countries.
Do you love, support and defend your family? Does that make your family a religion? Do you love, support and defend your family by constantly tearing them down, complaining, hating some of the members, personally attacking the members who disagree with you or saying you wish you were part of some other family?
Then how come so many people believe the liberals when they say that dissent is the highest form of patriotism? Is that how your family works? Whatever they want to do you dissent?
As Americans, this country is our family. We are members of the same tribe. Everything we do should be in the best interest of America. And when we send our sons and daughters into harms way, all dissent should stop and every effort should be put into supporting their effort and all thoughts to victory.
The time to dissent from the war in Iraq was while it was being voted on. Congress, overwhelmingly supported sending the troops to into combat. When things get tough, we should become more determined not crying out to quit. Not attacking the Commander-in-chief. Not leaking secrets or declaring how many Americans are ready to quit.
If you are an American and you do not love, support and defend your country, you are not patriot. You either are very ignorant to just how remarkable your country is or how superior the system is compared to the rest of the world or you are deliberately trying to destroy it.

To be a true patriot you do not have to love and support your government blindly..ever..in fact a true patriot questions. For the life of me I cannot find the quote from one of America's founding fathers on this subject. Does anyone know?

Well, it depends upon how you define religion. In my view, they are not as religious beliefs tend to cross national boundaries, while nationalism and patriotism tend to be tied to a particular nation.

they are similar in the sense that people will put their own or others well being in jeopardy out of a loyalty to a religion or nation...translated: some people consider a nation or a religion something to kill for or something to die for....not me though...I believe in people over ideas.

No, but it can have similar chatersitics. Difference is nationalism is localized to one country, while religion has no borders.
