If you have no experience, you won't get anything.
You have to understand that this is a business 1st. There are millions of dollars being thrown around and a big emphasis on ratings and revenue.
2nd, your only shot to do anything is to get in as an intern somewhere and work your way up.
Program Directors won't hire someone who has not proven them-self on air...You might want to think about starting at a music station in a small market (better chance to work your way to the studio, faster).
It will take you years of dedication and hard work.
Good luck

If you're serious about this you will need to commit to a career in broadcasting and be prepared to start at the bottom and work your way up. The problem is that things are pretty stripped down. More and more stations are going to nationally produced syndicated shows rather than locally produced shows, because managers know that people tune in for these syndicated shows and they know that they're not going to be dealing with headaches and snafus of locally produced shows. So you have a bit of an uphill battle. I like the idea of hosting an internet show, if for now other reason than to gain experience. I've heard of other people who work in a small market, pay their dues, then move into a bigger market as a "fill in". In fact that's the best way to break in... let a talk radio station program director know you can fill in during someone's vacation time... It'll be like a trial... If you suck they'll never call again and If you're good you'll fill in for more and more vacation times and if you're lucky break in full time. Good luck to you!

I've tried pursuing a career in the same field. Without schooling or any kind of broadcasting degree, it's a pretty big gamble. Here's what I tried. Find a major terrestrial radio station in your area. Listen for the head DJ. Call into the radio station, become a "listener". Then meet the DJ at a remote broadcast and strike up a friendship. Offer to volunteer or tell him/her that you are interested in this career and want to do everything you can. Chances are you might score a part time internship, allowing you to get to know the people in the biz, and you can see what they like and dont like. Also put together a tape. I dont know what to put on it exactly but do like 5 minutes of a "mock" radio show have your buddies call you and just talk like they would hear on your radio show. Worth a try!

Fortunately internet radio makes it easy for anybody to set up their own on-line station that people can listen to, either through a stream, updated Podcast, or direct download. Even if your ultimate goal is to be on AM or FM radio, this is a good place to start, short of maybe college radio stations. If you can, I would say try looking for an on-line station that already exists and might be able to add on a talk show. That way you've already got a means of promoting your show and don't have to start off completely from scratch. Record a sample show at home and send it to them. Good luck.

Do you have a diploma in radio or Journalism? That is a good first step. Make demo tapes and send them out to radio stations, get an agent. Try to volunteer on campus/community radio shows in your town to get your foot in the door and strut your stuff and see how it goes.

Ask around at your local radio stations. Take any job going and work your way up. My friend started out as a newsreader for Heart.fm (a local station) and now has a regular morning show.

They only give those to people that are cool, and unfortunately my friend, you are not one of those people.
Get a job at Blockbuster or something.
