I want to get five mollies, tetras, or guppies. The five would be in a ten gallon tank. Is this the right tank size, should it be smaller or bigger. Also, could I put one male Betta with either of these breeds of fish?

All are very easy to care for. Mollies and most tetras are very hardy and work well with a 10 gal tank. Some tetras and guppies can be sensitive to stress and shipment, but all will do fine once the tank is established. I would not put a betta with the guppies because it will nip the guppies' fins. The betta will do well with both the mollies and some tetras (some of the larger tetras are fin nippers and would not do well with a betta).

FYI IMO you should not have any tank smaller than 10 gal unles its for small fish quarintine or for those with a bunch of male bettas.

Good Luck!

To be honest, any of those require about the same level of care. The only difference will be when the guppies or mollies have fry. In that case you will see some few survive and you will have to deal with rehousing them. For that reason alone I would suggest you go with the tetras.

Forget all the trash you are reading in some answers, a betta will be fine with any of the above fish. I have kept bettas with all of the fish you list, including many types of tetras, no problems at all. The worst problems you might see are the other fish picking on the betta, but a male betta is very peaceful towards other species.

If you get neon or glowlite tetras they should be fine with a male betta in a ten gallon tank, some people have had success with guppies and bettas others have not due to the fact guppies can resemble a female betta, occasionally you will get a very aggressive betta that won't tolerate any tank mates but I think that is quite rare.I don't know anything about mollies so someone else will have to help you with them.My betta is in a 5 gallon tank with 4 neon's.

a big part of it depends on you and what variety or species you get. First off the betta would be fine with all. (you may see a little fin nipping at first with the guppies but it will stop after a week or two. the betta will also most likely eat many of the babies any of you guppies or mollies might have) The mollies and guppies are fun if you would like to breed as they do it al on their own. For the tetras it depends only because of what species you get. The hardest to care for you are probably going to find are Cardinal Tetras. Easiest tetras to care for would probably be; Black Skirt, White Skirt, Glo-lite, and Bleeding Heart tetras. I know I probably didn't make you decision any easier but I hope some of this helps. Good Luck

Though not always, bettas actually *can* be suitable tankmates for other fish, with the right environment (provide some plants and hiding places in your tank) and fish (no fish with long flowy fins, or bold colors they might confuse as another betta). Bottom line, though, it's not advised for beginners. You might end up with an aggressor on your hands and you might not, but won't know before it's too late.

Please note that mollies will best benefit from brackish (partially salty) water and a lot of other fish don't, so research your tankmates. Also, neons and many other tetras prefer to be in schools, so you wouldn't want less than 6 of them. (Neons and bettas are not good tankmates, the movement can actually stress out a betta... plus he can get his fins nipped. The betta is not always an aggressor!)

I think that would be ok in a ten gallon tank. But, no more fish in that tank.......

You might not want to put a betta in with the guppies or other fish that have flowing fins. I've housed a betta in with community fish for around two years.

i have a male batta in a ten gal tank and he kills the fish i put in wiith him but it all depends because tetras are known for killing themselves by running into the bottom of the tank. mollies and guppies would be ok but it rally depends on the betta cause some r independent and others can be with 5 other betta males. i would get the betta and put one guppie with him and wait a week and if all gose well u probably have a calm fish that likes company so get more fish.but if u have a problem u can put the betta in a small container and keep it and fill ur 10 gal tank with comunity fish.like mollies guppies and tetras. those are all small breeds so i think out of those breeds u could have 15fish at max cause u dont want to over crowd. plus get real and fake plants so ur fish can hide if they dont get along with another fish.

With my experience in a pet store tetras would be the easyest to care for and five would be fine in a ten gallon tank. I believe a Betta would be fine in a tank that size with the others. GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR FISH I am working on a marine tank my self I NEED LUCK TO

Mollies and guppies would be fine . tetras are aggressive to other community fish . As for the Beta . I have never put one in a tank with other fish when it was not a disaster . They eat the fins off the beta .
