GOP Rep. Steve King of Iowa -- fresh from his efforts to build on our southern border the sort of electric fence used for livestock -- was planning to introduce an amendment to prevent Nancy Pelosi from 'consorting with the enemy'.

The amendment -- attached to appropriations legislation -- would have prohibited Pelosi from using State Department funds to visit Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan or Syria.

Well, King's measure was voted on early this morning in the House of Representatives. And it went down to a crushing defeat. The final tally: 337 noes; 84 ayes.

Needless to say, all the Democrats voted against it.

However, only 84 of 201 Republicans voted for the measure, suggesting that many Republicans, too, think it's okay for Pelosi to 'consort with the enemy'. Go figure.

At no time has Pelosi consorted with the enemey. She has held talks with leaders of nations something that Bush should be doing. Congress upheld the American right to talk to other leaders of nations and freespeech. I know that hurts you conservatives, it goes against your political correctness. The real crime is Bush's foreign policy or lack there of.

I live in Iowa and Steve King is an idiot. Fortunately, he's not my representative.

The toughest part about the GOP losses last November was that Steve King who the conservative Des Moines Register accurately called "an embarrassment to Iowa" won re-election and a great man like Republican Jim Leach lost.

Iowa Republicans are mind-numbingly stubborn and would die of starvation rather than think for themselves.

It's obvious that even the level headed among the Republicans realize that for a member of Congress to travel to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, or Syria does not mean that she is "consorting with the enemy." None of these countries have been declared enemies and to label them as such is the poorest of diplomacy. Many Republicans in Congress have traveled to these countries and consulted with their leaders. To pass a bill preventing one Congressperson to travel there and not another is ludicrous.

How do you conclude that "consorting" is having a conference meeting with potentially violent enemies.
Didn't Nixon meet with China? Didn't Reagan talk to Russian leaders?
Bush won't meet with them I guess, so Pelosi wants to show that a Democrat will at least talk to them.

If it wasn't so tragic that some one is actually trying to officially label a fellow politician as anti American, I'd say it was comic. Political satire at its best. I would have loved to have eavesdropped on the writing of the bill. lmao

"We CAN say enemy, we don't have to refer to the State Department's list"... Silly

The real funny thing about her Syria trip was the she was passing Republican congress people on her way there.

Just fodder for the talking heads who run conservative talk radio. I really don't understand how people can listen to Rush.

Bush has no interest in diplomacy. In fact it has been shown
that his adiminstration has quashed diplomacy at every opportunity. Its hard to justify killing someone when they are surrendering.

Honestly, Jane I could care less if Pelosi consorts with the enemy. She is making a fool out of herself in front of the American voter, and she (and others like her) will eventually be the demise of that which they represent.
