Yes, it is. You need to trust your partner to be loyal, caring, understanding, faithful, and respectful of you. Without trust, there is no true intimacy. And true intimacy is what it's all about.

Is gas the most important thing for a car?
The real world is more complex than a yes or no answer.
If you dont have gas it doesnt run.
If you have a 2-stroke it can run but make a ton of pollution.
If you blow a tire it can still not run for a different reason.
Trust is a huge component for a relationship, but its not the only one. There are a dozen things that if they arent there then the relationship is over.
Its strange and interesting to find out that the top ten most important items are the same for men and women but the lists are reversed. The number 1 for a woman is more often than not the #10 for a man.
Check out this book:
His needs/ Her needs - how to affair proof your marriage.
http://www.amazon.com/His-Needs-Her-Building-Affair-Proof/dp/0800717880
It clearly lists out the top ten and describes how to find out what your sweeties top ten really are.

It is definitely one of the most important things. You can't have a good relationship without it. Respect, kindness, empathy (trying to understand what the other person is feeling), and sensitivity to the other person's needs are also very important
And if this is a romantic relationship, love is essential.
Hope this helped!

i agree with the first two answers, but in a connected sort of way.
first of all, respect is important, but respect is intimately connected with trust. you cannot TRUST someone, if you don't RESPECT them. they cannot go one without the other
likewise, communication and trust are linked. TRUST implies that you trust the other person to COMMUNICATE when there is a potential problem.
Trust is definitely the most important thing.

No, everyone lies. If you don't think you lie than you are lying to yourself. The most important thing in a relationship is accepting the person the way he/she is and showing them your love.
