One of "My Folders" has become extremely large and I would like to periodically move its contents to an external storage device. Is there some way to accomplish this? Thanks for your help with this.

Yes. You can copy-and-paste or cut-and-paste all of the contents.

Or you can find My Folders and just copy-and-paste the whole thing C:\Documents and Settings\{your user ID} and then delete the specific contents of that folder later, if you wish.

Open your folder, select all, form the Edit menu. Then go to File and select Send To it will show you your alternatives, if you have a USB Flash Drive connected it Will be there. point and click and you file will move to the new destination. If you do copy and paste, you will still have the file on your document folder.
Good luck

Yes, just copy the data that you want to transfer and paste it onto the flash drive.
In the case of CD's you will need a burning program, but they can do the same thing. Just "burn" the data to a disk.
