It's simply a data storage device which is plugged into an available USB port. The concept is similar to the old floppy drive where you could put files on the floppy disk. However, the new USB flash drives are faster and hold much greater amounts of data that the old floppy drive disks did.
You can store whatever kind of file or files you wish on one of them. Data sizes start at 128MB and go well upwards of 2GB these days. I just bought a handful of 256MB Kingston's for about $4 each.

You can store just about any data file on it you want. Think of it as a large floppy disk.
This is mostly why these are getting so popular as floppy disks are no longer larger enough.
I use mine mostly for backup. I store copies of items that I would feel really bad if it lost them.
Keep in mind that hard drives fail. Computers fail. Think about what would you feel really bad about losing if your computer were gone.
I use Windows Briefcase to backup data to my flash drive. I save important items to my briefcase and frequently synchronize to my flash drive.
So if my PC has a hard drive failure or suffers any other catastrophic failure, my important stuff is saved. Programs can be re-installed, but my documents are what are important to me.
Consider keeping pictures, documents, mp3's and such. Just make sure you buy one large enough to suit your needs.

They are simply a small, portable hard drive. So anything that you can put on a hard drive can be put on a "Thumb" drive if there is enough space.
They can also be use to transport data between computers.
Once plugged into your system you can "copy and paste", "drag and drop, or save to them. They are very handy. I carry one at all times. So if I find something on someone else's computer that I would like to have I just put it on the thumb drive and take it home with me.

You can store anything on it. With Windows Vista, if you buy one with something called ReadyBoost on it, then Vista will use it for extra memory and make the system run faster.
