1977 XR75 - Left Crankcase Cover - Alternator.
--You'll need a "multi meter" (available at electronics stores like Radio Shack - less than $20).
--Set it to Rx1
--Remove the spark plug for ease to turn the flywheel.
--Attach one lead of the meter (doesn't matter which one) to a metal part of the engine (ground), or a motor mount bolt.
--Unplug the stator wire.
--Attach the other lead to the stator wire.
--If there is more than one - try one at a time till you find the correct wire, using this procedure:
--Turn the flywheel in the direction it moves when running (push the kick start lever to check).
--When the needle (or numbers if the meter is digital) moves when turning the flywheel, that's the wire to use.
--On the flywheel is a line marked on it.
--Somewhere on the crankcase should be a protrusion (pointer).
--When the flywheel lines up with it, the spark plug should fire.

--When the points are closed, a complete circuit is made - meter - one side of points - other side of points - ground - meter.
--When the points open, the circuit is broken and the coil fires the spark plug.
--Turn the flywheel in the direction of rotation.
--Adjust the points to get the flywheel line and pointer alinged when the needle of the meter moves.
--And/or check/adjust with a timing light when the engine is idling.
--If this sounds to complex, or not enough info, purchase a shop manual

Purchase a shop manual anyway, before they go out of print.

Buy a service manuel and read it. We get paid to repair bikes and not answer questions. If a man makes a living selling wingets why would you ask him for a free one?
