Does anyone know exactly what kind of pill "mother's little helper" originally referred to in the 50s and 60s?

I do not know, but I know from the late 1960s in a military base in Australia, the Australians used the expression to refer to Valium - a Roche tranquillizer.

Either speed, black beauties were common back then or a relaxant, valium type pill.
