My brother has recently won a fish at a town party type thing. We have no clue what it is, or what it eats. For the most part, it is gold, with blackish fins. It's alittle white at the bottom, and about as big as a thumb. We have a food that says it is for goldfish and other types, but it doens't seem to be eating it. It also swims to the top of the tank and puts it's head near the top and open and closes it's mouth, probably to breath better. We have had it for three days now.

If you won it somewhere its most likely a goldfish (especially with the color you described). If you have it in a bowl then its trying to get air from the surface of the water because it is not getting enough from the water since the water is not being circulated . It is also probable suffering from ammonia and nitrite poisoning if its in a bowl. It needs at least a 10 gal tank with filtration to do well. Make sure, no matter what type of tank its in, that you remove any food that is not eaten within the first few min after feeding. Also with a new tank you should only be feeding once every other day. Please be responsible and do not bring home pets you know nothing about. Good Luck!

You'll need to identify the fish first in order to get proper advise. Some species have different requirements than others. Try looking at pictures of fish at some websites, and see if it might help. Usually they give away bettas or goldfish for things like that. Bettas come in a wide variety of colors so I don't rule that out as a possibility...

It could be a type of goldfish, but it sounds like a molly/plattie(prob. a plattie).
Get it new flakes.
I recomend Tetchra Min Color.
Also, get it some dried bloodworms.
Those are common fish food favorites.
Platties are fairly easy, but need at least a 5gal tank and 1 friend to be super happy!

If it has long fins on the top and bottom, it might be a Betta because you said it keeps going to the surface. Search "Betta" online and you will be able to find about a billion different pics and just as many color strains. Don't base the Betta so much on what color it is, look at the body shape. If not a Betta it might be a Platty or Molly, maybe even a huge Guppy.

more than likely it is a very young goldfish. they can go a few days without food. make sure you are taking out any food that isn't getting eaten. change his water regualarly and think about getting him a larger home if you want to keep him around. goldfish do great in 30 gallon aquariums.
